Do you think Abraham Lincoln was a good president?

Do you think Abraham Lincoln was a good president? Do you think he was a good person?|||No, not particularly. He took office as a slave holder, then only under pressure did he relent and get a law passed banning slavery. He did not free anyone. The law did.

He lost control of his generals and had more infighting and backstabbing then anyone. He had no military experience, having screwed up one assignment in the Guard.

He, like Kennedy, only got famous for being killed.|||Jim H's answer is way off base and has no basis in fact. Lincoln never owned slaves, in fact he was anti-slavery. That is the prime reason southern states began to cede from the Union because he promised to stop further slavery expansion as new states were admitted to the Union. At the time he took office there was a balance between pro- and anti-slavery states. As these new states in the west were admitted, the anti-slavery position would eventually obtain a majority vote in congress that would abolish slavery, and the southern way of life. Because of Lincoln's position, and holding that position despite the south's threat to cede from the Union, he became a president with strong convictions that didn't take the easy way out.

I think Lincoln was a strong president. He forced himself to continue the fight despite catastrophic losses on both sides of the Civil War and a country that hated him for not settling the conflict after so many years of devastation. Despite all of these things, he stayed the course and was re-elected president.

Whether or not he was a good person I can't say, or even what that means. Did he beat his kids? Did he beat his wife? Did he cheat on his taxes? Did he have sex with interns? Who knows for sure? What we do know is that he had a moral compass that he followed. If that makes him a good person, so be it.|||Yes, he did what he had to do. His ultimate goal was to keep the country together and he did. His primary concern wasn't freeing the slaves (which is what most people think), he was mainly concerned with preserving the union.|||yes he free'd the slaves|||Yes.|||yes he was one of the best we have ever had
