I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And in as much as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race.|||Simply put, because people choose to believe what they want to believe. They have a habit of "forgetting" the negative aspects of someone that they hero-worship, and Lincoln is the #1 best example of this.
If they would READ some REAL history, they'd see that Lincoln was NOT the "Great Emancipator" as history - meaning the victors, the North - has painted him to be. Truth be told, he had just as low an opinion of the black man as everyone else in that era did.
But please, let's not confuse the issue with the truth.....|||Lincoln is generally considered to be a great president despite the fact that he declared war on his own country, killed over 620,000 Americans, and imprisoned thousands of others. In his time, he was rightly considered a tyrant and a despot. And now he has his face on two monuments.

|||And to all those people claiming he freed the slaves: he only freed slaves in the South. Slavery in the North continued, and the freed slaves were basically out of work and shelter. Lincoln's words were largely ineffective. The rest of the world ended slavery (before the US did) without violence.

|||well he got the ball rolling....
i love abe!!|||What's your source? What was the context?
Come on, don't be scared. I just want to know your source. Can we have an open discussion, or are you just slandering from behind your avatar?|||i know! he was just another racist of the times. he only did it for economic reasons and should not be held to this great satndard he is today.|||You're absolutely right. He only brought about the Emancipation Proclamation from pressure put on him and America by England and other foreign nations.|||Because people are ignorant.|||That was just election talk. didn't anyone ever explain to you that politicians lie to get elected?
he is judged by his actions, not his political speechs|||He saved the Union, he didn't champion equality. You are taking a quote out of context. You must be a freshman in college. Think for yourself.
Update: I can't believe some of the idiotic answers on yahoo questions. Read a book, kiddies . Don't take this guy's word for it.|||That is pathetically sad. What is interesting to me is that with so much overwhelming evidence that even the best of this countries historical figures were overwhelmingly racist some people still want to pretend that Black people have not suffered tremendously at the hands of whites. The United States has a huge debt to pay. After reading that all you can do is pray for this country and hope the hearts of this generation are better than that of its ancestors.
Some people actually believe this country was founded on Christian principals. Unbelievable.|||Provided he really cared about the slaves he freed, this speech was his way of gaining support from the racist white people who make up the majority of this society. If this speech was indeed his heartfelt opinion, then it still doesn't matter. Whether he cared about all people or if he made the decisions he made out of desire for political gain, at the very least, the slaves were freed.
As for whatever other people believe in, people tend to just roll over and believe anything they're told instead of thinking for themselves.|||Good point. Maybe if you lived back then you could have convinced him how he wasnt a great president who did indeed free the slaves, and you could still be a slave ya loudmouth.|||Because that's how history was written.|||He set the slaves free, to make it equal rights. If you were a slave you would be thanking him.|||This statement of yours (not Lincoln's) is typical of the endless litany of complaints blacks are always crying about. Lincoln fought to end slavery but his motives weren't good enough so now we don't like him. This gets so old it is exhausting to listen to time and time again. Lincoln did more for black people than any other president has ever done. His debates with Douglas in 1858 were for the senatorial seat of the free state of Illinois. Lincoln's comments then do not reflect his goals and motives four years later when the country was at war. I cannot count the number of times I've heard blacks complaining that even thought something was done for them it wasn't good enough. If five blacks are on a television program then some black whiner will ask, "Why aren't there eight?" If there are eight then why aren't there ten? And if EVERYONE is black on the program, then the same blacks will complain, "Why ain't dare any white people on dat program? Wassa matta? Dey racist against us or sumpin? Is dey too good to work wiff black folks?"
And the tireless complaining never ends. Get a job, pay your taxes, stay with your spouse, be a father to your children, pay your own way in life, and leave Lincoln to the scholars who actually read more than one quote from him.|||Well... even though he did so to pad the union army with soldiers during the civil war, he DID create a situation where black people could be free in this country.
I guess when you look at is as a means to an end, it was a pretty good thing to do. But I bet if more people did their research like you did, more people wouldn't be so quick to hold him in such high regard.|||Jesus, give the man a break.
There is no way all of the nation would want to even think about blakcs voting and being jurors. They couldn't stomach them learning at that point.
Lincoln knew this and had to tell the people what they wanted to hear in order to win the first major battle.
And if you knew anything about the caste system in the U.S. you would realize that it was set up that way by the top !% of the wealthy and used to enslave everyone.|||I was not aware that he said those things, but he did lead the battle to free the slaves.|||i didnt even realise ppl did think that! i certainly dont
