What did Lincoln believe was the significance of the Civil war?

Also what was Lincoln's significance in the civil war?

Thanks!|||Freeing the slaves became a war aim later in the war, but initially, it was completely about preserving the Union. As Lincoln said, 鈥?br>

"If I could free all the slaves and preserve the Union I would do that. If I could free none of the slaves and preserve the Union I would do that. If I could free some slaves and leave others is place and save the Union, I would do that also."|||It was a states' right to secede vs. the federal government's desire to preserve the Union. People generally knew that slavery was a huge underlying factor but it wasn't until later in the war that Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation. In fact, at the beginning, he was willing to allow slavery to not grow but he wasn't initially looking to eliminate it.

From Shmoop|||it was all about keeping the union together. if he could get t he union together but keep slavery, he would have. but he realized he'd have to defeat the south to keep the union together so he also freed the slaves. i know that's a very eloquent answer but that was how it was put to me from a history teacher. soooo, lincoln's significance was keeping the union whole.|||The significance was whether states had the right to secede from the union. Lincoln believed no state has this right.|||the snozzberries taste like snozzberries|||freeing slaves.
