What are Lincoln’s ultimate goals in the Gettysburg Address?

How does Lincoln appeal to the emotions of his listeners?

How does Lincoln “legitimize” the Civil War for those who wanted to end it sooner than he believed necessary?|||Lincolns main goal throughtout the civil war was to preserve the Union. He reinforces that in the Gettysburg Address, particularly in the last portion of the speech.

"that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not perish from the earth."|||To make an enemy and kill them you must have a good reason. Slavery was a good one to give Lincoln open access for what he was going to do. He was a murderer.

|||Lincoln invoked the principles of human equality espoused by the Declaration of Independence and redefined the Civil War as a struggle not merely for the Union, but as "a new birth of freedom" that would bring true equality to all of its citizens, and that would also create a unified nation in which states' rights were no longer dominant.
