Why does Abraham Lincoln sit instead of stand in his own memorial?

My teacher wanted me to research whether there was a specific reason as to why Lincoln sits in the Lincoln Memorial, but Jefferson stands in the Jefferson memorial. I have had no such luck, so any help would be appreciated!|||The main influence on the style of the Lincoln Memorial was the Temple of Zeus at Olympia, Greece. The focus of the memorial is Daniel Chester Frence's sculpture of Lincoln, seated on a throne. French studied many of Mathew Brady's photographs of Lincoln and depicted the President as worn and pensive, gazing eastwards down the Reflecting Pool toward the capital's starkest emblem of the Union, the Washington Monument. Beneath his hands, the Roman fasces, symbols of the authority of the Republic, are sculpted in relief on the seat. The statue stands 19 feet 9 inches (6 m) tall and 19 feet (6 m) wide, and was carved from 28 blocks of white Georgia marble.|||I seem to recall that the artist wanted to depict Lincoln in a pose that showed him as both thoughtful and weary.|||Be a long time to stand don't ya think? He was thinking and he did his best thinking sitting down.|||Lincoln was very tired after the Civil War.|||maybe bc he was sitting when he got shot by booth.

What are some issues that Abe Lincoln faced during his presidentcy?

how did Lincoln deal with these issues and how did these issues make him feel?|||Probably one of the biggest and most well known issue is slavery. Although, Lincoln wasn't necessarily against or for slavery, he wanted to "perserve the union" as he put it in a letter to Horace Greeley. He dealt with this with the emancipation proclamation, which freed slaves in any area not under the union's control (confederate state's). So slavery was essentially done away with for most states, since most union states were against slavery, and the confederate states had slavery absolished. The thirteenth amendment would later fully abolish slavery for the entire US and make it illegal.

As bad advice as this may sound, you may want to check out the wikipedia page on Lincoln. It has a ton of information about Lincoln on it that you can use to get ideas and do further reasearch on (away from wikipedia, as it isn't really considered an acceptable source). How would the Founding Fathers have reacted to Abraham Lincoln?

Abe Lincoln is a national hero today, but would this opinion have been held by the Founding Fathers (Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson, Franklin)? Washington and Jefferson both owned slaves, whereas Franklin was an ardent abolitionist. How would they have treated Lincoln if they met?|||Lincoln went against Founding Father's aspiration. He crashed will of the people and will of the states with the heavy imperial powers of federal government.

It was against everything Founding Fathers felt worth dying for when they rallied colonies (future states) to fight Federal powers of London.

King George - he sent troops trying to preserve the integrity of the Empire just like Lincoln did 100 years after him.|||Abraham Lincoln was profoundly influenced by the Constitution. Since his main focus was the unification of the United States I think the Founding Fathers would have approved of his philosophy and methodology.|||I think they would have been proud of Lincoln. He reunited the country and put an end to slavery (even though the Founding Fathers encouraged it).

How can I fix the window gears in my Lincoln?

It's a 93 Lincoln and the motors work but the plastic gears are broke. I had an 86 Lincoln and the same thing happened and the guy I sold it to said he used a steel washer and they worked fine ever since. How do I do this?|||The usual cause of failure is 3 plastic rollers inside the motor, triangular case cover.

You can sometimes turn a pressure screw at the rear of the motor but the rollers are already broken, adjusting will only delay replacement and incur the extra work of another removal.|||You need a die grinder or "Dremmel tool" to cut teeth in the washer. What would cause my 89 Lincoln town car to not start?

my 89 lincoln towncar won't start. It has been running fine but all of a sudden it wouldn't start once stopped. There is power and the instrument panel display and radio comes on so it is not the battery. I replaced the silinoid but when I hold up the turn signal to start the car it doesn't do anything, doesnt even click. What could be the problem? and any suggestions on how to fix it? Thanks|||power tolight or radio as littl eto do with power to starter which require ten time more to turnover motor than a raido does to work so clean your battery cables most likey the problem|||You can't test a battery by looking at it and seeing your lights come on! If the battery is over 4 years old, I'd replace it no matter how good it tests and you need to have the auto store do a "load test" on it. Once the engine cranks over fast enough and generates at least 9.6 volts across the battery while the engine is cranking, then you can ask "why doesn't the engine "start". First check for good spark with the spark tester below. Fords of that vintage had ignition module failures. Watch the battery change video below to clean the battery and cable terminals.

Most car batteries are in the 500-800 amp range, and are 12 volts. Its possible for a battery to produce 12 volts, so some of the lights will work, but it's only making 20 amps. After that I would look at the battery cables.|||Replace the starter relay and drive away !!!!!

Why Is It That Abraham Lincoln Is Portrayed As One Who Wanted To Abololish Slavery?

Especially in schools, we learn that Lincoln was a great man who wanted to get rid of slavery. That wasn't the case. Anyone who reads up on him finds out that ridding slavery was never one of his intentions.

Why is he portrayed as doing so?|||You seem to have misunderstood what Lincoln WANTED to do, and what he thought he COULD do practically and under the Constitution.

He was not an 'abolitionist' in the sense that his agenda was to pass federal laws to ban slavery. But he DID wish for the end of slavery, had a strategy for moving TOWARD that goal, and acted strongly to end it, by Constitutional means, when the opportunity arose.

Here's an overview of HIS views. First to summarize:

Lincoln thought slavery a moral EVIL and wished to see come to an end, but he thought the wisest course was to tolerate it where it existed, but PREVENT its SPREAD.... by which means it would be put "on the road to extinction".

He did not believe he (as President) or the Congress had Constitutional authority, to act against it in the states, though they COULD and SHOULD keep it out of the territories.

______________

Let's let Lincoln explain himself-- in his statements over YEARS.

First, Lincoln declared slavery a serious WRONG -- not just a personal wrong, but a great injustice, destructive to society, and contrary to the most basic 'proposition' he believed the country to be founded on.

in the 6th Lincoln-Douglas debate (Oct 13, 1858)

"I suggest that the difference of opinion, reduced to its lowest terms, is no other than the difference between the men who think slavery a wrong and those who do not think it wrong. THE REPUBLICAN PARTY THINK IT WRONG-WE THINK IT IS A MORAL, A SOCIAL AND A POLITICAL WRONG. We think it as a wrong not confining itself merely to the persons or the States where it exists, but that it is a wrong in its tendency, to say the least, that extends itself to the existence of the whole nation. Because we think it wrong, we propose a course of policy that shall deal with it as a wrong. We deal with it as with any other wrong, in so far as we can prevent its growing any larger, and so deal with it that in the run of time there may be some promise of an end to it"

http://www.nps.gov/archive/liho/debate6.鈥?/a>

shortly after -

"I believe the declaration that 'all men are created equal' is the great fundamental principle upon which our free institutions rest; that n---- slavery is violative of that principle; but that, by our frame of government, that principle has not been made one of legal obligation; that by our frame of government, States which have slavery are to retain it, or surrender it at their own pleasure; and that all others--individuals, free States and national Government--are constitutionally bound to leave them alone about it."

- letter to Hon. J.J. Brown, Oct 18, 1858

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/2657/2657鈥?/a>

"there is no reason in the world why the n----- is not entitled to all the natural rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence,--the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I hold that he is as much entitled to these as the white man. I agree with judge Douglas, he is not my equal in many respects, --certainly not in color, perhaps not in moral or intellectual endowments. But in the right to eat the bread, without leave of anybody else, which his own hand earns, he is my equal, and the equal of Judge Douglas, and the equal of every living man."

- Speech at Columbus Ohio, Sep 16, 1859

Cooper Union Address (Feb 1860)

"If slavery is right, all words, acts, laws, and constitutions against it, are themselves wrong, and should be silenced, and swept away. If it is right, we cannot justly object to its nationality - its universality; if it is wrong, they cannot justly insist upon its extension - its enlargement. All they ask, we could readily grant, if we thought slavery right; all we ask, they could as readily grant, if they thought it wrong. Their thinking it right, and OUR THINKING IT WRONG, is the precise fact upon which depends the whole controversy. Thinking it right, as they do, they are not to blame for desiring its full recognition, as being right; but, THINKING IT WRONG, AS WE DO, can we yield to them? Can we cast our votes with their view, and against our own? In view of our moral, social, and political responsibilities, can we do this?"

http://showcase.netins.net/web/creative/鈥?/a>

In his First Inaugural Address (Mar 4, 1861)

"One section of our country believes slavery is right and ought to be extended, while the other believes it is wrong and ought not to be extended"

http://www.bartleby.com/124/pres31.html

(Do note that seven states had seceded at this point, and Lincoln is seeking to win them BACK. So don't expect an outright attack on slavery here! Yet he DOES repeat the belief that slavery is WRONG.)

Shortly before issuing the Emancipation Proclamation (when he had decided to do so), in explaining how he made decided his actions re slavery as President Lincoln concludes:

"I have here stated my purpose according to my view of official duty; and I intend no modification of my oft-expressed personal wish that all men everywhere could be free."

http://showcase.netins.net/web/creative/鈥?/a>

____________

The issue then is, what did Lincoln propose could and should be DONE about this evil.

In his famous "House Divided Speech" (June 1858), kicking off his Senate race against Douglas:

"I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved; I do not expect the house to fall; but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction, or its advocates will push it forward till it shall become alike lawful in all the states, old as well as new, North as well as South."

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part4/4h2934鈥?/a>

Here he briefly shows how HE, as on OPPONENT of slavery, expected slavery to become EXTINCT -- by stopping it from SPREADING. (He repeated this point many times in the debates with Douglas.)

Again, in the Cooper Union Address, after the quote cited above, he ends the speech by explaining the Republican strategy and its reason. (Note that INSISTS on NOT yielding to the demands of Southerners and Democrats in response to THREATS of disunion.) :

"Wrong as we think slavery is, we can yet afford to let it alone where it is, because that much is due to the necessity arising from its actual presence in the nation; but can we, while our votes will prevent it, allow it to spread into the National Territories, and to overrun us here in these Free States? If our sense of duty forbids this, then let us stand by our duty, fearlessly and effectively. Let us be diverted by none of those sophistical contrivances wherewith we are so industriously plied and belabored - contrivances such as groping for some middle ground between THE RIGHT AND THE WRONG, vain as the search for a man who should be neither a living man nor a dead man - such as a policy of "don't care" on a question about which all true men do care - such as Union appeals beseeching true Union men to yield to Disunionists, reversing the divine rule, and calling, not the sinners, but the righteous to repentance - such as invocations to Washington, imploring men to unsay what Washington said, and undo what Washington did.

"Neither let us be slandered from our duty by false accusations against us, nor frightened from it by menaces of destruction to the Government nor of dungeons to ourselves. LET US HAVE FAITH THAT RIGHT MAKES MIGHT, AND IN THAT FAITH, LET US, TO THE END, DARE TO DO OUR DUTY AS WE UNDERSTAND IT."

____________

The REST of the story is in Lincoln's actions AS President

1) he presented the Emancipation Proclamation, which he believed he had the authority to invoke as an act of WAR, as ALSO an act of JUSTICE for which he was hopeful of GOD'S approval

http://www.nps.gov/ncro/anti/emancipatio鈥?/a>

2) his fight from EARLY in the war for "compensated emancipation", which he achieved in Washington DC but the border states refused to accept

3) his later all-out push for the passage of the 13th amendment - a CONSTITUTIONAL means of ending slavery nationally

see much more here:

http://www.mrlincolnandfreedom.org/|||Because inevitably, that is what he did.

I agree that his original decision was capitalistic in heart to raise the prestige of the manufacturing north over the agricultural south, but by crushing the agricultural people, he abolished slavery...slaves were necessary in the agricultural areas before tractors and machinery and not in factories. Abe wanted the north to make more money and be able to get cheaper goods.

Just as it is today, war is caused by nothing more than money making propositions. If something good comes of it, the historians will emphasize that and negate the money making, selfish and greedy aspects of it. Another part of the propoganda machine at work...this generation didn't invent that.|||Many people learn only the superficial essence of history. You have delved deeper to realize that Lincoln frequently tried to tell the Americans of the South that he had no intention of abolishing slavery in their states if they would stay in the Union. Many Southerners refused to believe his promises. Many African Americans praised Lincoln as their liberator. The myth grew. In the end, Lincoln became the emancipator due to the war, but that was not his original inclination when he began his presidency.|||Because he in fact did want to. In July 1862, Congress moved to free the slaves by passing the Second Confiscation Act. The goal was to weaken the rebellion, which was led and controlled by slave owners. While it did not abolish the legal institution of slavery (the Thirteenth Amendment did that), the Act showed that Lincoln had the support of Congress in liberating slaves owned by rebels. This new law was implemented with Lincoln's "Emancipation Proclamation."

Ending slavery was always a primary goal of the Lincoln administration. However, the American public was slow to embrace the idea. In a shrewdly penned letter to Horace Greeley, editor of The New York Tribune, Lincoln masked his goal of ending slavery by making it subservient to the cause of preserving the union.

The Emancipation Proclamation, announced on September 22 and put into effect on January 1, 1863, freed slaves in territories not under Union control. As Union armies advanced south, more slaves were liberated until all of them in Confederate hands (over three million) were freed. Lincoln later said: "I never, in my life, felt more certain that I was doing right, than I do in signing this paper." The proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the rebel states an official war goal. Lincoln then threw his energies into passage of the Thirteenth Amendment to permanently abolish slavery throughout the nation.

Where is the best place to run 12volt amp wire on 1998 lincoln towncar?

I am adding a amp to a lincoln towncar and am trying to find the grommet in the firewall to run the 0g power wire but can't find one. Where can I run the wire through the firewall? Driver or passenger upper or lower? How can you tell if you have THX sound in a 2003 lincoln ls?

I bought a 2003 lincoln ls and noticed that there were two subwoofers in the near the back window. This seems like the thx sound but there is not decals on the speakers to denote this.. Does any one have any idea?|||I am reasonably sure the THX only comes with the navigation system.|||The best way to tell If you have THX (theater) sound if your not sure is to test it. Sit in the driver seat like you normally would when driving. Lean over the the center of the car so your somewhat centered in the car. Put some music in that has a lot of variance like rap or hip hop. You should be able to hear seperate sounds coming from different speakers and the music sounding like its moving from one speaker to another. If so then you have a THX sound system.

Hope this helps you out.

What are the disadvantages of getting a V8 or 8 cylinder car? Also is a Lincoln LS a reliable car?

Hi, I'm still car shopping and would like to know what is wrong with getting a car with a V8 engine? What are reasons to get one with that?

I'm thinking about a Lincoln LS with V8. Is the Lincoln V6 (any year) a reliable car? |||Disadvantages - Obviously weight %26amp; fuel consumption. Because of the added weight up front, tends to nose drive under heavy braking. Car will not handle well in emergency situations.

Advantages - In the case of a Lincoln LS - needed power to get that car moving. Nothing like power on demand when you need it. Very safe car crash test wise. Relatively cheaper to insure - not targeted by thieves.

Lincolns tend to have average reliability. As already noted, if repair is necessary - parts tend to be expensive due to the Lincoln "luxury status".|||Disadvantage....gas! They will guzzle it like crazy! Really, there isn't much need for an 8 cylinder unless you are planning on using it for towing a trailer or heavy loads. That is why many work trucks have an 8, so they have the power.|||on a big car like a Lincoln the v8 will be better...the car is big and weighs a lot... the 6 is ok on flat land but you'll b happier with the 8 in the mountains the differnce in MPG is small|||Gas mileage is bad, but it has some power. Reliability is average.

V8 engines usually, but not always have more power than other engines.|||its the same ****. v8 and/or 8 cylinder ride. v8 will smoke up your gas quicker than v6,8cylinder or a 4cylinder. all lincon cars are riliable cars. its just that parts are very expensive if they need to be replaced|||some V8 cars get just a good fuel mileage as V6. you need to check the spec's.

How to replace the 1997 Lincoln Continental Oxygen Sensor?

1997 Lincoln Continental, 4.6L engine, V8.

Do you think a 1988 lincoln town car thats in very good condition is worth anything?

my grandma bought it brand new and has always been garaged, it's got like 120,000 miles on it. it's black paint is pretty much flawless and all original. is it worth it to keep it or should she just get rid of it? the kbb value on it is pretty low but is it considered a classic?

also it's got velour seats, not leather, which is very rare in a lincoln.|||Keep it. It's worth a lot more than the book says. Solid, very maintainable chassis. Parts are cheap. And it's a sweet car to drive to boot. Keep it.|||The velour seating wasn't that rare in those cars later Lincoln pretty much went all leather but that is not the case for the 1980's. With 120,000 miles its not going to be worth a whole lot for a long time. Here's what make it collectible, low miles preferably under 50,000 but slightly over isn't bad. Being a signature series model or Cartier model and to a lessor degree the color and the options like Moonroof and the factory wire rims. They made and sold a lot of these cars from 1980 to 1989 and there is still a lot of them left on the road so you have to have a unique one. Now 10 to 15 years from now things will change some but not a lot. It will cost you more to keep it then what its worth with maintenance and up keep and storage its just not worth the time and money.|||Those boxy 80's Lincolns do not bring much in the way of price when sold since there are so many of them around still and they are not very unique. The better value is to keep it and use it if it's still a good running clean vehicle. You couldn't expect to get more than about $1,500 for it by selling it. Best of luck!|||It may not be a 'classic' in the true sense of the word, objectively speaking, but it is a solid, reliable and comfortable car.

If it's been maintained and serviced properly it should last another 100K miles.

Could not agree more MikeR !|||That car is considered to be a classic now as fewer and fewer are on the road.k The color of it will allow it to shine up real nice. It may be worth keeping as the engine in that car is a small v8, good on gas and quite durable. I know because I have one and its a real head turner.......keep it|||It depends on the market and how well maintained it is. Also if well maintained you need records. How well does it run?? You might find someone who would want this to keep for an older vehicle to someday be a classic but it would be a while before this came about. Hope this helps.

Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus and imposed martial law in Maryland in order to?

Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus and imposed martial law in Maryland in order to

A. prevent people from keeping slaves.

B. keep the state from seceding.

C. force blacks and whites to get along.

D. end the Civil War.|||B. On April 27, 1861, the writ of habeas corpus was suspended by President Abraham Lincoln in Maryland and parts of midwestern states, including southern Indiana during the American Civil War. Lincoln did so in response to riots, local militia actions, and the threat that the border slave state of Maryland would secede from the Union, leaving the nation's capital, Washington, D.C., surrounded by hostile territory.|||Obviously the answer is B. Virginia had moved quickly to secede to prevent Lincoln from sending federal troops in and declaring martial law. He knew that Maryland held Southern sympathies and was preparing a legislative vote on secession which prompted him to send military troops in to arrest key legislators and to illegally suspend the writ of habeas corpus( there were still functioning civil courts, he just couldn't dictate how they would rule). Lincoln's preemptive strike against Maryland saved him from being surrounded and being forced to move his government to New York or Pennsylvania.|||definitely B.

How to hook up subs to a stock stereo in a 05 Lincoln LS?

OK, so I have a 2005 lincoln LS, I want subs in it but want to keep the stock 6 disc changer. I have installed subs before but on an Aftermarket cd player, where you just plug in the RCA's and the Remote wire and call it a day. I dont know how to hook them up to a stock stereo though. Is it Possible? How hard is it?|||yes it is possible. just take the stereo out and connect the remote wire to the blue wire with wite stripe. and idk about the rca cables. there should be a rca connection on the back of the deck.|||You'd have to go buy an adapter. Once youve got that, it should be pretty easy, similar to an aftermarket head unit.

How can i make a Lincoln Mark VIII converteble?

I owne a lincoln mark 8 and i vould love to make it converteble, i don't know anyone hwo have done it befoure. If you hapend to know how i can i make this happend pleas help me out. Thank You!|||Indeed, the roof is a major part of a cars structure. You will have to reinforce the frame or you will have problems like doors not opening or closing. The car will actually sag in the middle.

The next situation to face is that you will need a convertible donor car. You will need to change everything convertible related to the hardtop. Doors, windshield, underbody supports, mounting points for the convertible mechanism. You will have to move the hydraulics, the motor pump, cylinders, lines. You will have weeks involved with bodywork and aligning the folding frame. This is a massive undertaking. I have seen people try it. I have never seen anybody succeed. The cars always ended up in the scrap yard. You are much better off selling your car and buying a convertible. However, you might investigate a Carson top.|||You will have to take it to a custom shop that is qualified for major things like that. There is more to it than just cutting the roof off. There is a lot of extra support that has to be welded in, because taking the roof off seriously weakens the entire structure of the car. It can and has been done I am sure, you just need to do your homework to be sure it is done in a safe and reliable way. You wouldnt want to be driving down the road and the car break in half. Good luck!|||probably wouldnt be road legal afterwards

How do you talk to Leroy Walker on Fallout 3 at the Lincoln Memorial?

Everytime I go to the Lincoln Memorial this chinese guy keeps saying I have to talk to Leroy Walker and to follow the dirt path. Well everytime I try to follow him everyone shoots at me? How do

I follow him and where's the friggin dirt path?|||I thought that too, and I kept causing them to shoot at me.

If you are facing the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, there is a door around the corner to the left. It's on the same side of the building as the steps, just off to the left. Once your conversation with the guard ends, walk over to the left and into the door and there you will find Leroy Walker.

This quest is strange though...slavery being perpetrated by a black man. What a strange twist of fate.|||Then you're obviously not following him. The guy says not to go up the damn stairs because they're ordered to shoot. They even yell at you if you get near the stairs. Some people just don't take a hint, I guess.

There's a service entrance to the left of the stairs. Leroy will be there.|||Ok this is easy fast travel to the Lincoln Memorial when you get there look to your right and you will see a door, go there.|||Ok, DO NOT go on the steps, or the slavers will shoot you.

There's a door, by the tents.

Car is a late-70s Lincoln sedan, moderate mileage, owned and not driven much by an old man (friend's late father). Naturally it has power windows and other accessories.

The battery went dead, and looked old and crusty. So my friend bought a new battery and asked me to help with swapping it in. When I went to connect the cables to the terminals, there was so much arcing that I couldn't get the clamps on.

Key was out of the ignition. No accessories, to our knowledge, were turned on. Yet something is obviously draining power . . . .

I'm an experienced shadetree mechanic; have rebuilt engines and auto trannies. However, electrical gremlins are not my forte and neither are FoMoCo products. Any suggestions? How do I go about tracking this one down?|||Start at the fuse box. Connect an amp meter in line at the battery, and start pulling fuses and breakers. If you still have an amp draw, disconnect the voltage regulator, if external. If this removes the draw replace it. If you still have the drain, disconnect the alternator. If disconnecting the alternator removes the drain, replace the alternator. Replace fuses and breakers one at a time, checking amp meter each time, and you should find your drain.|||not to dout your abilities, but first make sure you are connecting the battery up right.the positive goes to the starter solenoid mounted on the fender by the battery box.if the arcing contines, disconnect the cable at the solenoid and remove the smaller wires.reconnect the large cable and then start touching the smaller wires one at a time to the large cable.the one that arcs is the culprit.|||Shouldn't be any arcing from a new battery into a car. Off or on. Thats the strangest thing of what youve said.

Might want to check out the starter and the alternator as well. If those are on the fritz they can cause a drain that will kill a battery.

If you have AAA they can check out the lead culprits for free.|||you f'd up on installing the battery or the starter is also crusty to the point that it is touching neg to pos , replace the starter, you probably fried the voltage regulator hopefully it is separate from the alternator, if the car is running test the voltage on the battery while the car is running, also see if there is battery fluid coming out of the top of the battery, if so the voltage regulator is shot, and you don't have a draining problem you have a battery killer problem by continuously over charging the battery via a faulty voltage regulator sending to much voltage back the battery, each battery may work for a week or 2 but it will kill the battery and possibly make it explode.|||Before you start self diagnosing the problem and spending mucho dollars only to find out it didn't work, take it to an automotive electrical shop. They can trace the draw in a very short time. Then you can decide whether you want to pay them to repair it or do it yourself.Be prepared to spend $50-$75 for the diagnosis.|||I've worked on a few old Lincolns. You have to love them, because the original harness has usually been cut into several times. If it sparks to ground right away, I'd be looking at the biggest lead going to the starter. The old starter may be shorted, and that will cause a huge arc. After you find the BIG short (and it shouldn't be hard to find. Substitute a small battery and use a regular static light) isolate/remove it and then replace the new battery. Then run some heavy ground straps (8-10 Ga.) from the engine and from various other solid parts of the body to various other parts of the engine compartment. This will eliminate transient drains caused by corrosion and wear. You may want to just take the time and run the whole harness from the fuse box with the ohm setting on your multimeter. If you plan on keeping the car it's a good investment of your time. All classic car diagrams are available free on-line. (several sites).

Why is the election of Abraham Lincoln as President considered to be an immediate cause of the Civil War?

But putting aside all the propaganda that we were taught in school, Lincoln pretended to care about the slaves to get re-elected, but in reality could have cared less about the blacks and only started the Civil War to keep the south from breaking away from the USA. I have a 99 lincoln town car and sometimes when im driving the brake light comes on?

I have a 99 lincoln town car and sometimes when im driving the brake light comes on , on the dashboard. When I press the emergency brake with my foot it doesnt light up! What the heck?|||It could be as simple as low brake fluid in your master cylinder reservoir, when stoping, turning, taking off, the level sensor in the reservoir constantly reads the fluid level, and if the sensor reads a low fluid reading, your light will come on. As far as when you hit the e-brake and the light does not come on,,,who cares?, does that really matter anyway?, probably just a bad e-brake pedal switch, don't sweat that. Now there is a anti lock brake lifght too, but it is a yellow light in the dash, you did not specify the color. We need more info, ie..is your brake pedal soft?, does it fade while braking?, do you have to keep topping of the reservoir?, does it come on while braking? You really need to be more descriptive if you want a good educated diagnosis. Oh yeah, it could be the reservoir level sensor on your master cylinder.|||Have someone check out your wiring. From what it sounds like, something other than your breaks are causing the light to come on, so something else could be tripping the wire.

How can anyone say Lincoln was a good President?

He killed more americans than any other pesident in US history (this fact alone should be enough). He destroyed the economies in the South causing massive poverty %26amp; hyperinflation. He expanded the federal gov't %26amp; suspended Habeus Corpus. He would lock individuals up war crimes if they spoke out against his policies. What is American history really teaching us by putting Lincoln on this god-like pedistal. Is it teaching our kids that good presidents are dictating war pigs?|||I guess because Lincoln saved the Union and yes it was a very bloody affair which very few people would have had the character to see through to the end. (And in his defense if George McClellan was even half the General that McClellan himself thought he was then the Civil War would have ended at Antietam saving thousands of lives and would have averted the wholesale destruction of Atlanta and other southern cities on Sherman's march to the sea. But then would you have to ask yourself: Would President Lincoln have issued the Emancipation Proclamation when he did and with the same or a different set of particulars?)

So saving the Union and freeing African-American slaves would seem to be two reasons to honor President Lincoln unless you think this country would have been better off as a Northern U.S.A. and a Southern U.S.A. with slavery lawfully permitted in the one country and not in the other. It most certainly would have changed world history with two differing foreign policies emanating from the America's and different alliances and two armies and navies and ultimately two air forces poised to attack the other. Would we have intervened in either WW1 or WW2. What about the wars in Korea and Vietnam? Would all of China and India and Southeast Asia now be controlled by Japan. Would Europe and Russia and the UK and Africa be controlled by Nazi Germany. And, if so, would the two United States, Canada, Mexico, central and South America still exist or would they have formed a new mega-government to defend themselves from Germany and Japan.

It's very hard to say what our future might have become absent Lincoln's presidency, but you might try to do some basic calculations of how it might well have gone badly for future generations of Americans and Europeans and Asians, et cetera, if Lincoln had not preserved this Union.

I will say that Lincoln was a good President. I will go even further and say that Lincoln was our most essential President, excluding George Washington for obvious reasons, when you consider the arc of American and world history after our Civil War.

You might go to the library and get several wide ranging and well written books that cover the history of America and the world after Lincoln. Then you might ponder how the future might have been without Lincoln and, if you give him some due, then even you might find a rational basis for concluding that his presidency was probably a very good thing for America and the world. (And if you conclude otherwise, I will be pleased to read your book which argues for that interpretation.)

But really if it's just stalling it could be you have a vaccuum leak and that's causing the engine not to pull enough gas into the cylenders. because the power brake assist is straining the engine under load at idle. I'd check vaccuum, then maybe try swapping your fuel filter out. your engine could also be starving for gas.|||Check a few things for me first. Does it seem to not want to go over 35-45mph? And also check the throttle opening (butterfly) When you accelerate, the butterfly opens letting more air mix with gas. When you are at idle it is fully closed accept for a tiny bit of air getting past the butterfly plate. The computer knows how much gas to give it at idle, unless the bottom of the butterfly is mucked up with a bead of carbon at the bottom. In this scenario, the car's computer is giving the same amount of gas put not air-carbon buildup blocking air. AKA----flooded engine. Take off the intake hose and spray carb cleaner on a rag and wipe it clean at the bottom of the butterfly opening(make sure the car is off) while doing this. If thats not it it could be the catalytic converter is plugged if it has issues trying to go over 35-45mph.

What is the difference between a 2007, 2008 and 2009 lincoln Navigator?

Hi, just wondering what the differences were in the three different models of Lincoln navigators. It may be hard to understand, but basically are there any differences in the way the 2008 model looks from the 2009 model? In other words, how do the three models look different from each other? Thanks.|||Since the 2007 model redesign the Navigator no longer uses the same 2-Speed electronic transfer case as the Expedition. While the Expedition continues to use the heavy-duty transfer case with low range 4-wheel-drive gearing, the Navigator has been demoted to a 1-Speed transfer case, lacking low range gearing and the off road torque re-calibration program that accompanied the 4L (4-wheel-drive Low range) mode.

For 2008, packaging for the Navigator's luxury and convenience features was simplified, resulting in the elimination of the perennial Luxury and Ultimate trim levels and the standardization of a number of features that were previously optional. Some of these newly standard features included heated and cooled front seats, power-folding third row seats, a power liftgate, and a 600-Watt 14-speaker THX II-Certified audio system. Also newly standard was a 3.31:1 rear axle ratio, though a 3.73:1 ratio was still available as option for the Navigator and remained standard in the Navigator L. Newly available was a rearview camera to aid in backing up.

For 2009, the Navigator's 5.4 L V8 gained 10 hp (7.5 kW) as well as flex-fuel capability. The rearview camera that was new for 2008 was now standard, as were heated second row seats, Front Park Assist, a capless fuel filler, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and Lincoln SYNC.[12]|||Good info from (i'm lying) if he is not lying about it. But to really answer your question there is no appearance difference 2007 was the first year of the new design and I believe the front lower grill was changed for 2009 but that's it.

How do you change the windshield wipers in a 1985 Lincoln Town Car?

I have a 1985 Lincoln Town Car and I can't figure out how to change the windshield wipers. I tried opening the hood and changing them that way but that didn't work. They don't pull straight up and turning them on then off when they are up doesn't work either. They just go back down. Can someone help me?|||dr layne is right. Turn off the key, when wipers are midway up the windshield, so you can pull the arm straight out away from the windsheild, grab the wiper and flip it over. This will allow you to remove the entire head, not the arm. Then follow the directions that came with the new wipers. I would suggest replace the entire wiper head, not just the rubber piece and get an expensive set of wipers ($10.00), not the cheapest ($3.00). |||You should do what I do, pull up in front of Pepboys, or AutoZone, and ask a silly question to make them think you're clueless i.e. "Can you show me where the tools are to install windshield wipers" or "Can you show me where these go on my car?" . They'll come out to show you, and usually end up doing it for you. |||Turn the wipers on, while they are in mid wipe, turn off the key, not the switch. If you turn off the switch while the key is on, they will park under the hood.

Where to park outside DC and how to get to Lincoln Memorial by metro?

We are driving from Indiana and plan to park outside of D.C. Where would be the best suburb or location to park for the day, and how would we get to the Lincoln Memorial by metro? Which metro? Location of boarding and exiting?|||The Lincoln Memorial is actually closest to Foggy Bottom station, which is served by the Orange and Blue Metrorail lines.

Since you're coming from the west, it would probably be easiest to park at any of the Metro stations on the end of the Orange Line along I-66 in Northern Virginia. Vienna station is the furthest out and also has the most available parking. From there you will be able to board any Orange line train headed in the direction of New Carrollton and exit at Foggy Bottom. The ride costs $3 per person each way on off-hours and weekends. You will have the opportunity at Vienna station to use the automated machines to purchase individual fare cards. Any amount can be stored on the cards so it makes sense to put $6 on each card so you won't have to purchase additional fares for your return trip.|||If you are traveling during the weekend you may want to consider crystal city. It is a nice area and very close to DC and tourist spots. Although parking can be expensive during the week, on the weekends there are a lot of free parking garages off of crystal drive.|||Ben! Listen to me my friend, as I know what's what.

If you are traveling all the way from Indiana, then I think you might be staying at a hotel in Virginia or Maryland. If that is the case, check with your hotel to see if they offer free shuttle service too and from the nearest Metro (subway station).

On the other hand, if you were planning on staying further out of town, then this is what I would do...

If you will be arriving on a WEEKDAY, then I recommend that you park your car at one of the long term parking lots at Reagan National Airport. (I think it costs $8 a day to park there.) From there, they have a regular little shuttle bus that picks you up at the parking lot bus stops (make sure you write down with lot you are parked, which row, and which bus stop!). And the little bus will ferry you to the main terminal of Reagan National Airport (the shuttle, of course, is free).

From the main terminal, look for the signs that indicate where the Metro (subway) station is located.

You can buy your Metro fare cards there at one of the many fare card vending machines that they have. The machines take both cash and major credit cards. BUT, be sure to have the cash, because I have had a machine or two refuse my credit card for some strange reason.

The Metro (subway) is one of the cleanest and safest in the USA. I could get lost in my own backyard, but it's almost impossible on the Metro. Just read the signs and feel free to ask questions from people around you.

From National Airport, you will want to make your way to the Smithsonian Metro stop. That is basically in the center of the National Mall and allows you access to just above everything.

OPTION TWO

Do you mind walking a little? IF you arrive on a WEEKEND (Saturday or Sunday), then drive past Regan National Airport to a small park called Gravely Point Park. It's at the north end of the main runway at the airport. Parking here is FREE. From there, you have to WALK north along the Mt. Vernon Bike Trail for about ONE FULL MILE. At this point, you arrive under the 14th Street Bridge on the Virginia side of the river. Just walk across the bridge and it takes you into Washington DC, right next to the Jefferson Memorial. From there, you can walk toward the World War II Memorial and then to the Lincoln Memorial.

I really like walking from Gravely Point Park. It allows you to absorb the skyline of Washington DC from the Virginia side of the Potomac and makes for a memorable visit.

How much would it cost to change suspension on 2000 Lincoln Navigator??

I have a 2000 Lincoln Navigator, and it has air suspension. However, the air compressor broke, and two of the air bags have a leak. I want to fix my suspension the cheapest way possible. I think the cheapest thing to do would be to replace my air suspension with a conversion kit that would put my vehicle on regular coils. I found a web site where I can buy the conversion kit for $420, but how much would the labor cost to change it for me?|||People have been changing air bags out to more conventional suspension since the 50's. I guess I am not listening to the media lately...they only give what they want to give...and run with it. None of it is truth anymore.

They are trying to build OBAMA up before the greatest ERROR (not era) gets off to a running start! They are trying to make him fly before he even starts the engine.

It amazes me considering all his lies even AFTER he was elected that he is allowed to get away with and people still are mesmerized by him.

Give it a year or two..you will find the smell is off the rose and he was a HUGE mistake.

I will keep my money...I will keep my guns...I will keep my freedom....YOU CAN KEEP THE CHANGE!|||There is no comparison.. Lincoln was a great man. Obama is not! Lincoln did many great things for this country. Obama will not !

Lincoln freed he slaves. Obama will continue welfare for the freed slaves.

I think it is a joke that he has to compare himself to such a great man that did so many wonderful things for our country.|||It's just the way these times we live in are and what a sad state our society in this country is in. The guy hasn't set foot in the office yet and the media is making him a national hero. Other than the state of Illinois, there is nothing in common. Lincoln emerged from Illinois long before it turned into the corrupt political cesspool that spawned BO.

Obama doesn't have to play dumb. he is d u m b.|||Obama is like Lincoln in no way whatsoever.|||I honestly can't think of one way Obama is like Lincoln. obama wants to spend alot of money. lincoln spent alot of money...ON THE WAR. they both divided the country.they are both from illinoise

The emmancipation proclamation did not free a single slave. The proclamation said that it would free all the slaves in states opposing the union. and since all the states opposing the union were not incontrol of the union they could not free a slave. as for the states like missouri it did not free slaves there either because they did not fight against the union and kept there slaves.|||Lincoln had far less political experience and formal education... Also, he played dumb so that people would underestimate him. Obama doesn't do that.

What did Abraham lincoln mean in his second inaugural address?

What did Abraham Lincoln mean in his second inaugural address when he stated, ""Neither anticipated that the cause of the conflict might cease with, or even before, the conflict itself should cease"?

any input would help! Thanks!|||This part of the third paragraph refers to

"parties" -- those seeking to save the Union and those seeking to dissolve it (i.e. Secession politicians and state groups)

Neither the Federal government's proponents nor the "insurgents" (as Lincoln put them) had a clear forecast that SLAVERY (the cause as he put it at the top of the third paragraph) would be halted before a surrender and the end of military fighting and occupation of rural and urban locales by Union troops. . .

How is the patriot act different from what Abraham Lincoln did?

During the Civil War, Lincoln appropriated powers no previous President had wielded: he used his war powers to proclaim a blockade, suspended the writ of habeas corpus, spent money without congressional authorization, and imprisoned 18,000 suspected Confederate sympathizers without trial.

Imagine, the uproar it would create is a president did something similar today.|||President Lincoln was preserving the union. And the union--and our liberties--did survive. His measures were much more extreme than anything in the Patriot Act, but he didn't have to deal with nutzoids like the ACLU.|||Lincoln was dealing with a Civil War. Americans were at war with their own government. Needless to say, that isn't at all what is happening today. So, unless the government considers us to be the enemy, there isn't any need for our President to become dictator for a while. And our government doesn't have sufficient cause to suspend our rights in order to deal with a foreign threat.|||It's not all that different, but that doesn't make the Patriot Act right. It made Lincoln wrong.

Yeah, it turns out Lincoln was a human. Not that he wasn't awesome, he held this country together during a horrendous time period longer than it takes most of us to figure out who is and who is not a Muslim and why it doesn't matter anyway. But he did make mistakes.|||Your question and details seem to provide two different opinions on the Patriot Act. How did Abe Lincoln influence the rest of the world through the emancipation proclomation?

my stupid group leader is making me write a paragraph on abe lincoln's emancipation proclomation and how it made the rest of the world want to end slavery.

you can just send me urls. i need to cite all my crap anywayzerz

thanks.|||The Proclamation turned foreign popular opinion in favor of the Union for its new commitment to end slavery. That shift ended the Confederacy's hopes of gaining official recognition, particularly from the United Kingdom. If Britain or France, both of which had already abolished slavery, were to support the Confederacy, they would be supporting slavery.

Prior to Lincoln's decree, Britain's actions had favored the Confederacy, especially in its construction of warships such as the CSS Alabama and CSS Florida. As Henry Adams noted, "The Emancipation Proclamation has done more for us than all our former victories and all our diplomacy." Giuseppe Garibaldi hailed Lincoln as "the heir of the aspirations of John Brown". Alan Van Dyke, a representative for workers from Manchester, England, wrote to Lincoln saying, "We joyfully honor you for many decisive steps toward practically exemplifying your belief in the words of your great founders: 'All men are created free and equal.'" The Emancipation Proclamation served to ease tensions with Europe over the North's determination to defeat the South at all costs.

What did Abraham Lincoln accomplish that made him a hero?

I have to write a report about someone from the past who I would like to meet. I chose Lincoln, but I can't think of enough things to make it a 250-300 word essay. I know he declared the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves and that's about it. Please Help! Thank You!|||He lead the nation through the Civil War and eventually reunified the country. You could trace back to his beginnings and write about the aspects of his life that shaped him into the presidential figure we admire so much. His genuine concern for the American people and the United States, I believe, was his most endearing quality.|||Emancipation Proclamation did not free the slaves . the Emancipation Proclamation was a war move to win the union back . slavery didn't end until 3 years after the war by that time lincoln was already did . the 13th amendment freed the slaves . Emancipation Proclamation was just a speech not a law . in fact in that speech lincoln says that if he could save the union without freeing slaves he would do it that way .|||Because of rising sectionalism in the American South, combined with slavery and tariff laws and finally the election of Lincoln as President, the US Civil War began. What made him a hero is that he stopped at nothing to maintain the Union (the USA/the North) as one and not allowing the Confederacy (the South) to become its own independent nation.|||why was freeing the slaves good

Solved my problem.|||check the starter or the spark plugs and wires you might want to check the the altornator to|||If it's got spark, then the prob's gas. Have some body listen to the gas tank, and turn the key off and on. He should hear a buzz each turn of the key. No buzz; bad fuel pump. If it buzzes each time then find the fuel hose going into the engine and take it off. Stick it into a plastic bottle and turn the key again. If it doesn't pour out, it's the filter. If it does and still don't start, i'm stuck.

How did Lincoln鈥檚 view differ from the radicals of his party?

How did Lincoln鈥檚 view differ from the radicals of his party?|||The radicals in the Republican party were abolitionists. They wanted to abolish slavery right away. Although it is clear from his writings and debates with Stephen Douglas that he was also opposed to slavery, Lincoln wanted first to preserve the union. He knew that the South's economic system was based on slavery. If he ended slavery as president the South would rebel. So he was mostly concerned with preventing the spread of slavery to the new territories in the West. Soon after he was elected president, South Carolina seceded from the Union anyway. Other Southern states soon followed. When he issued his Emancipation Proclamation after Antietem, it proclamed the slaves in the Confederacy free. It wasn't intended to free the slaves in the border states (Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri %26amp; Delaware). He was afraid that the border states would also secede from the Union and join the Confederacy. This could have prolonged the Civil War a few more years. I hope that this has been a help to you.|||It would have been nice if the "asker" had given me a "Best Answer" instead of just leaving it up to the voters. How did Lincoln and Douglas deal with dissent in wartime?

I have to compare (and contrast) the methods and ways these two civil war leaders dealed with dissent during the civil war, Ive only been able to find a little about lincoln and it had something to do with the Habeas Corpus.|||Lincoln dealt with dissenters depending on the dissenters perceived power. he had some jailed. he took over the Maryland legislature by force to keep that state from seceding and thereby isolating the capitol. I believe he suspended habeas corpus, during wartime the president has extra-ordinary powers.

Stephen Douglas died in 1862 and was not a leader during the war. Did you mean Jefferson Davis?

I also need to know how it works on getting

a taxi after a game. Is it hard? I will be attending

a game next month and I'm reading that the Holiday

Inn Stadium is not a good hotel to stay at and that

walking would be far and dangerous. So I am looking into the city but need assistance on how to

get out of the stadium. Thanks

How far is (Embassy Suites Philadelphia - Center City

1776 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy)

and would a taxi be expensive?|||Yes, a cab will be expensive, but you don't have to waste your money. The subway station is 1 block from the Linc, and there's another stop underneath City Hall, about 6 blocks from your hotel. If you're gonna take a cab at all, do so from/to the hotel to/from the subway. If you get in cab after the game, you'll just sit in traffic for and hour and watch your meter soar!

Also, there is nothing wrong with the Holiday Inn Stadium. It is on the opposite end of the parking lot from the Linc. It's only downfall is that the whole sports complex area is kinda isolated from the rest of the city, so if you planned on doing anything else that weekend you'd need to work out transportation.|||It's at South Broad Street and Pattison Avenue in South Philadelphia. It's one block east of the Pattison Avenue stop of the Broad Street subway.

Do you think Abraham Lincoln was a good president?

Do you think Abraham Lincoln was a good president? Do you think he was a good person?|||By what standard should he be measured?

At a time when the abhorrent subject of slavery came to a head, he had the misfortune of choosing a direction in which to lead the republic. While slavery was the wedge issue, what Lincoln was acting on was whether a state, after voluntarily joining the union, had a right to voluntarily leave the union (or be expelled by the other states for that matter). Nothing in the Constitution made membership in the union permanent or implicitly (or explicitly) ended a state's right to change its government as it deemed necessary. Such an idea was devised later and reinforced in the Pledge of Allegiance to deter any future secessionist movements that may arise.

The choice Lincoln made was to declare the secession of the Confederate states illegal, invade them, and force them to end their rebellion. The Confederacy asserted that all states retained their sovereignty when they joined the union and all states could leave the voluntarily joined union at any time they deemed in their best interests. The War of 1812 had brought about the nation's first experience with threats of secession, the Civil War (from the Union's perspective) was fought to settle the issue permanently.

Lincoln sought to forcibly maintain the Union and reinforce the principles of self-government outlined in the Declaration of Independence and reinforced in the Constitution. He invoked the "spirit" of the Constitution rather than the Constitution itself. Slavery, by definition and practice, had always stood as the great inconsistency of the republic. Lincoln had always stood against its expansion and the abomination known as the Kansas-Nebraska Act rekindled his passion for ending the spread of the practice.

Did Lincoln have the Constitutional authority to invade states asserting their right to change their government? No.

Therefore, did Lincoln faithfully execute his duty to protect and defend the Constitution? No, and a succession of Presidents in the 20th and 21st centuries have proven how much of a problem Lincoln created by setting that precedent.

By these standards, Lincoln was possibly the worst president to hold the office.

Is slavery the "black eye" on the history of the US? Yes.

Is slavery wholly inconsistent with the principles of the founding? Yes.

Was freeing the slaves in the Confederacy a great act? Yes. Regardless of whether or not Lincoln had any authority over the Confederacy, his the Emancipation Proclamation provided the first step towards making things right.

Unfortunately, none of the last 3 issues have anything to do with the powers enumerated for the Office of the President.

Was Lincoln a good person? Absolutely. He may have been the greatest man to hold the office. He believed in the right of individuals to govern themselves and followed the path he thought was necessary to achieve that end. While his actions were not consistent with the powers vested in him by his office and he set precedents for future office holders that have had devastating ramifications on our economic and social development, he aimed to remain consistent with his just principles. For that, he had more character, dignity, and integrity than most who have ever run for, let alone held, the office.|||He embodied leadership, the very thing presidency is all about. He was wise, and made wise choices. The thing that always got me about him is that he made choices based upon what was good for the country, not his own personal beliefs. If he didn't necessarily believe in something but thought it'd be good for the country, he'd go for it.|||I think he was the best for the time. A hardened man, raised on hard times and Intelligent. A man of the genital, would have failed us in the bloodiest war in history. He had great personal honesty, But some could argue his ethics honesty as the Kentucky defense proves. And he argued in favor of slavery. But if he took your money as a lawyer. He gave you the best defense he could. So a honest lawyer. He rose to the greatest Challenge our nation has ever faced. He over came that Challenge. So weather I think good or bad of him. He is a man who earned our country's respect. And that is a accomplishment few men do Merritt. The kentucky defense. He was representing a man accused of murder. After studying the case. He ask his Client. You have family in Kentucky. Yes he said. Then the best defense I can give you is to head that way now.|||Yes, but liberals can only comprehend an Obama type of phoney (or a Slick Bill Clinton type) as a good President. I personally believe that one has to live through a president's term(s) in office, in order to make a determination on said president's character and job performance.|||I'm not so sure. Sometimes I think Lincoln should have let the Southern states go. I don't think the loss of states' rights and growth of federal authority since the Civil War has been good for our country.|||He brought about the emancipation proclimation, so I would sa that he was one of the best. But he was assasinated before he could try to give the black man the right to vote.|||omg yes! he was my favourite president :D he abolished the slave trade and died a martyr =D

How did President Lincoln and Radical Republicans in Congress approach the reconstruction?

How did President Lincoln and Radical Republicans in Congress approach the reconstruction of the defeated South? Did either Lincoln or the Radicals succeed? Why or why not?|||Lincoln was more conciliatory and forgiving. Radical republicans demanded reparations.

Lincoln succeeded, but only in a sense. The reconstruction was supervised by Andrew Johnson because Lincold was assassinated soon after the war. Johnson had ties to the south and favored a soft and forgiving readmission terms for the former confederate states.|||Most of their bills to advance the country in reconstruction and with the advancement of blacks were defeated by angry southern white Democrats who couldn't stand the fact that Lincoln and the Republicans hated and defeated slavery. It ruined the South's economy and wealth.|||President Lincoln believed in letting the south "come back" without any real harsh punishment while the radical Repubs believed they should pay for their actions. The radicals succeeded initally because Lincoln got shot then Andrew Johnson took over.|||They didn't succeed because Lincoln's successor Andrew Johnson was a Southern racist, and gave power back to the White Southerners

Lincoln had beliefs. How do u think it effected Lincoln's thought and actions during the civil war?

Lincoln's religious beliefs appeared to have evolved. What were these beliefs? How do u think it effected Lincoln's thought and actions during the civil war?|||Sorry, I didn't know Lincoln. CLOSE!

He had beliefs which were obvious in his actions.

Honesty!

Morality!

Integrity!

Fairness!

Strong belief in our Constitution.

Belief in the Supreme Being. Surely he was well rewarded.

He had to believe and practice the Ten Commandments!

These beliefs surely influenced his decisions and actions regarding the Civil War.

He sacrificed with many negative opinions about himself and believed in the legitimacy of sacfrice for the good of all.

Even his own murder as a result of those beliefs.

Just my opinion from what I know of his history.

What happened to all the people in the Lincoln assassination?

What happened to dr.mudd? and johns wilkes booth and the other people who helped him. also who was also shot when lincoln was shot?|||During the Lincoln assassination, they also attempted to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson, as well as there secretary of state.

Lincoln was the only one killed/shot. The assassin who was ordered to kill VP Johnson never did so, and the man who was responsible in killing the secretary of state messed up horribly and he lived. (the story how he lived was funny).

(The man who was supposed to kill Sec. of State was a "moron". His orders were to strangle him, so he did just that. However the sec of state was wearing a neck brace from a previous injury and therefore, no hands could strangle him through a steel neck brace.)

As for the 3 main assassins, Booth was killed in a barn because Union soldiers lit the barn on fire. The other two assassins were jailed/killed. Dr. Mudd was sent to a camp in Florida, but was later pardoned for his good deeds. The deeds he done was cure many people of the yellow fever down in Florida.

Why was Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation important to the North during the Civil War?

Why was Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation important to the North during the Civil War?|||Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation right after the battle of Antietam, which pushed the Army of Northern Virginia back into Confederate territory. Lincoln believed this victory gave him enough leverage to demand that the South lay down its arms and return to the Union before 1 January 1863 or else lose its slaves. The South didn't go for it, so the war lasted another two years.

However, the Emancipation Proclamation gave the North some moral authority with England and France, two nations that had flirted with the idea of recognizing the CSA. With the North becoming more formidable in military strength and abolitionist sentiment, Europe eventually ramped down its support of the South.|||Two big impacts: added a strong social revolutionary reason for the conflict AND started the biggest involuntary transfer of property ( slaves ) of our history ( if we do not count taxes, LOL). Technically , it freed somewhere around 4 million slaves and devalued the southern economy by about 3 billion dollars. ( site 1) Its actual effect was a bit chaotic and of mixed success, but it established a new interpretation of "all men created equal" which we are still struggling with today. Just think, if not done at that time, then would it have been appropriate? I doubt that the South would soon do it voluntarily. Great depression? WWI ? WWII? I shudder to think of a modern economy based upon slavery.

Why was Lincoln unable to profess in 1861 that the government's objective in fighting the war was to eliminate?

Why was Lincoln unable to profess in 1861 that the government's objective in fighting the war was to eliminate slavery?|||Because he never felt that was the reason for the war. He believed that the Union was inviolable and that the confederate states could not be allowed to succeed unless all parties agreed (which he and republicans would not). He would not make them rejoin by force unless attacked first (which happened in April 1861). He wanted an end to slavery but had already passed a law which confirmed slavery in those states that had it and believed it would die an economic death, moreso once he had passed a compensation law which would fairly compensate slave owners for eliminating slavery (an offer only ever taken up by Washington DC)|||Because almost nobody would have supported a war to end slavery. Many did support a war to preserve the union.|||Additionally, he wanted to keep the "border states" (KY, MO, MD, DE) in the Union. They were states that still had slavery, but Lincoln did not want their population and resources to be part of the Confederacy. He also REALLY needed Maryland because Washington D.C. is between Virginia and Maryland and VA was already in the Confederacy.|||Because abolition was never his objective. Before the war Lincoln was a racist who opposed abolitionism. He only introduced the Emancipation Proclamation to weaken the South's war effort and enlist the freed blacks as cannon fodder|||Because it wasn't - the purpose of the war was to preserve the Union.

The Emancipation Proclamation came nearly a year and a half after the war started, when things weren't going well for the Union side, and was made for reasons of political expediency.

Any claim in 1861 that the war was to abolish slavery was not even in Lincoln's mind, and,if it had been, he'd have kept quiet about it, or the 4 border slave states (Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland and Delaware) would all automatically have seceded and joined the Confederacy.

Given the proximity of Washington DC (and therefore Lincoln himself) to Maryland, this would have been little short of disastrous to the Northern war effort.

I'm going to be moving to Chicago in a few months and am trying to figure out how long it will take me to commute to work via the El. I'm looking at areas like Lincoln Park and Lakeside. Could someone tell me approximately how long it would take from either of these locations?|||It takes between 20 and 35 minutes. Depending on where you're going from in Lincoln Park and to in the Loop, I'd estimate around 10-15 minutes. Lakeview is a little further, it might take 15-20 minutes. It depends on whether you're using the Red Line or Brown Line. The Brown Line sometime suffers from traffic in the Loop.|||Lincoln Park is 10 minutes, Lakeview 15 once you are on the train.
